If you are interested
in starting out by playing low-limit cash games, this is the first book
I would buy. Its advice will help you to recoup its purchase price
in no time. I know the urge to get into the game and play, but
fully understanding the principles outlined in this book will
immeasurably improve your game.

This book is
co-authored by world champion Tom McEvoy and poker legend T.J. Cloutier.
It is an absolute must for anyone who is serious about playing deep into
Pot Limit and No Limit Texas Hold 'Em tournaments. Its advice is a bit on the
conservative side, but it is solid. Following the advice of this
book only, I have been able to regularly go deep into multi-table
tournaments, although the conservative advice often leaves me short
stacked once I have been guaranteed to "cash."

This book is one of the classics. It
introduces basic concepts and strategy to the beginning player.
Some of its advice is beginning to show its age, but this is a book to
get if you are an absolute beginner.
David Sklansky has been a well-known poker theorist for decades.

Also by McEvoy and
Cloutier, this book focuses on how to play specific hands in
tournaments. Some hands are covered in the book above, but this
one is much more comprehensive. What do you do with A-K when
someone bets all-in with a rag flop? You fold, of course.

Sklansky followed up Hold 'Em
Poker with this book, which he co-wrote with Mason Malmuth.
This thick book is an indispensable resource for the limit hold 'em
player. The principles covered in here do not always transfer to
no limit play, but there are other books for that game. Highly
recommended.

I'm recommending this
book partly because of its low price.
It can belong in either category here, since it not only covers limit,
pot limit, and no limit Hold 'Em, but also other popular games such as
Omaha 8/B and Seven Card Stud. Hellmuth's advice is more
aggressive than others. Some say
that his chapter on Omaha 8/B is the best of its kind. Hellmuth
represents online site Ultimate Bet, where you can even play against
him!

A lot of people say that this is the best
book on limit hold'em play. It is very easy to read and includes
on the back cover a handy chart that helps beginners to evaluate the
quality of their pocket cards.

The bible of poker.
Another book that can fit in both categories because of the variety of
games it covers. However, Brunson is famous for his NLHE play, and
this book's chapter on NLHE is still excellent after twenty-five years.
Brunson and friends will release Super System 2 in the near
future, but this one is still worth a place in your library.

A must-read for
the advanced low-limit hold'em player. Recently published,
this is a large book that covers many crucial concepts. Read
this one after you have completed Lee Jones' Winning Low Limit
Hold'em. Miller et al. advocate a more aggressive strategy
that teaches you how to not miss any bets. I find myself
returning to this book again and again.

One of the more
recent guides, written by World Champions Brad Daugherty and Tom
McEvoy. Well worth reading. The betting charts (with and
without antes) are quite helpful, telling you when your stack is
short enough to be a "trouble" stack and when it is a "move in"
stack.

Hilger's book is the best one I've found that's dedicated to online
hold'em play. This is a dense volume, covering most strategic
concepts. Word-wise, you get your money's worth here.
Short chapters at the end deals with online-specific concerns such
as site selection, online tells, promotions, collusion problems,
etc. Devoted to limit hold'em primarily, this book includes a
LOT of valuable practice hands and situations from low-limit to
high-limit.

Dan Harrington won
the 1995 WSOP and made the final table at the 2003 and 2004 WSOP.
Advocating a "common sense" strategy, this book on NLHE play is
considered by many to be the best of its kind. This volume
covers basic strategic concepts for all levels of NLHE tourney play,
including online poker tourneys.

This new
book takes a different approach to limit hold'em instruction.
This guide gives the reader a visual context for 150 in-game
situations, showing you your pocket cards, the board, your position
at the table, and amount in the pot. One nice detail is that
with each example, you're given the "rank" of your pocket cards (out
of 169 possible combinations) as well as its win rate when played
against one random hand. Everyone knows that A-A is a monster
(86.1% win rate), but how about that K-T offsuit you seem to get a
lot? Would you believe only 9.1%? Some examples
demonstrate only pre-flop play (fold, call, raise), while other examples
take you through scenarios where you see the flop, turn, and river.
All examples proceed from a hypothetical $4/$8 limit game, which is
rarely spread at card rooms or online. The strategy and
concepts, however, apply well to $3/$6 and $5/$10 games. Even if it weren't one of the most reasonably priced instruction manuals,
this book would be highly recommended for its overall sound advice, especially for beginners.

Illustrated Guide to Texas Hold Em |

This is
Volume II of Harrington's impressive treatise (more than 800 pages
over both books) on NLHE, covering the strategy needed to succeed in
the later stages of multi-table tournaments. One of the most
useful sections is on heads-up play (this happens a lot more than
you would think late in tournaments,
especially when you are in the small blind). Harrington's
prose is easy to read and follow, particularly because of what might
be called a "literary" style that uses metaphor to illustrate
specific situations in poker games. If you are an advanced
player and find yourself going deep into tournaments, only to bust
out before cashing for the serious money, you need this book.

Finally
published in 2005, this is the book that everyone was waiting for.
Recent students of the game will recognize some of the names of the
contributing authors: Jennifer Harman (on limit hold'em), Daniel
Negreanu (on triple draw), and of course Doyle Brunson (on NLHE).
This volume covers games that have become popular since the
publication of the original Super System: Omaha High, Omaha
Eight-or-Better, and Seven Card Stud Eight-or-Better. Only half
of the book is dedicated to this kind of specific instruction,
however. The rest is a combination of autobiography (lots of
family photos), poker history, and general poker philosophy.
If you like to play or want to learn how to play games other than
Texas Hold'em, this book is a valuable resource. You will take
full value from the book only if you are interested in learning
about poker history and culture.

This
is the first DVD in Howard Lederer's course on NLHE. A good
intro to the game if you're tired of reading. Comes with a
handy pre-flop betting chart. Of the tight-aggressive variety,
Lederer's insights are quite sound, although you won't learn
anything new if you've studied the books listed above. In
fact, if you consider yourself to be an intermediate NLHE player,
you should skip to the DVD below. 90 minutes long. |

Writer Anthony
Holden tries to outdo his friend Alvarez with his account of joining
the professional poker circuit for a year of his life.
Trivia: The Mississippi (actually Florida) lawyer mentioned on the
first page of the Preface to the 4th edition is Randy Holland, the
pro who knocked me out of the 2004 WSOP.

This
is the best DVD of the three for advanced players. It even
includes some tells segments, some of which are recycled in the DVD
below. In addition to the pre-flop chart included with the
first DVD, this DVD also includes a hold'em race odds chart and a
general odds chart that converts number of outs into a percentage.
100 minutes long. |

McManus's book hit
the poker craze with just the right timing, although it owes a lot
to Alvarez's and Holden's efforts (he would be the first to say so).
It covers his amazing run at the 2000 WSOP as well as the
sensational murder of poker scion Ted Binion. Incredibly
entertaining reading.

Positively Fifth Street |

The
title of this DVD is slightly misleading. I thought that the
entire DVD would show you common tells given off by poker players a
la Mike Caro's tells book and video. The first chapters do
show you three common tells by focusing on body language, but the
rest of the DVD is more of an introduction to NLHE. Some of
the segments are taken from the first DVD in the series, Secrets
of No-Limit Hold'em. Not a bad buy for the price, but you
probably don't need it if you have the other two DVDs. 60
minutes long. |
